40 Bible Verses About Peace

What does the Bible Say About Peace

The Bible says a lot about peace, but there are several main points that are repeated over and over again. The following study of Bible verses on peace will help us gain clarity on what the Bible says about it, what exactly it all means, and how we can experience more of God’s peace amidst the craziness of the world today.

Bible Verses About Peace

When I study what the Bible says about a very specific topic, I like to list all the relevant scriptures I can find and then look for common themes. Sorting by theme helps me see the big picture of the issue at hand. I’m a big-picture girl, so doing it this way brings a lot of clarity and really solidifies the idea in my mind. It can also help us find exactly what we can do to apply it to life.

This is what I’ve done here with peace (and in my posts on faith, salvation, waiting on God, and sowing and reaping, if you like this type of study and want to check them out).

Peace Comes From God

Image of a glittering gift of peace.

“I am leaving you with a gift – peace of mind and heart. And the peace I give is a gift the world cannot give. So don’t be troubled or afraid.” John 14:27

“Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus.” Phillipians 4:7

It’s important to note that the verse before the one above instructs us to pray about everything and not worry about anything. We are to tell God what we need and be thankful for what He has done already. That is how we experience God’s peace.

Bible study tip: Anytime a verse begins with a word or phrase like "then" or "therefore" or "that is why," it is important to read the previous verse to fully understand the context of the verse you are studying. Click To Tweet

“And let the peace that comes from Christ rule in your hearts.” Colossians 3:15a

“But the Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. There is no law against these things!” Galatians 5:23

As you can see, true peace is a gift from God through the Holy Spirit. All we have to do is receive it!

Furthermore, we can also see in the above scriptures on peace that the peace God gives covers both our hearts and our minds. It’s important to have both covered. Our minds contain our thoughts and our hearts contain our emotions. If we have stillness in our thoughts but not our emotions, and vice versa, we won’t feel at peace overall.

Peace and Faith are Related

“You will keep in perfect peace all who trust in you, all whose thoughts are fixed on you!” Isaiah 26:3

“Don’t let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God, and trust also in me.” John 14:1

“‘Daughter,’ he said to her, ‘your faith has made you well. Go in peace.'” Luke 8:14

When we have a deep faith in God, serenity comes naturally. Have you heard the scripture about people who doubt being like “waves of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind?” It’s so true, guys! I’ve been feeling this lately.

God is asking my family to do some crazy things that don’t make sense to our human minds or from the world’s point of view. Every time I start to doubt His plan, I feel just like one of those waves of the sea!

I even created some printables of this verse so I could hang it up on my wall and be reminded that when I feel this way, it’s because my faith is wavering and I need to do something to strengthen it.

Peace and Righteousness Go Together, Too

“And this righteousness will bring peace. Yes, it will bring quietness and confidence forever.” Isaiah 32:17

“Those who love your instructions have great peace and do not stumble.” Psalms 119:165

“Oh, that you had listened to my commands! Then you would have had peace flowing like a gentle river and righteousness rolling over you like waves in the sea.” Isaiah 48:18

“And those who are peacemakers will plant seeds of peace and reap a harvest of righteousness.” James 3:18

“Keep putting into practice all you learned and received from me (Jesus)–everything you heard from me and saw me doing. Then the God of peace will be with you.” Philippians 4:9

“…letting the spirit control your mind leads to peace.” Romans 8:6b

Lots of these ones! What can we take away from them?

Righteousness brings peace and peace brings righteousness. It’s a righteous cycle! LOL!

I get the “righteousness brings peace” part. That sounds like the conscience at work. When we are living according to God’s commands, there’s nothing for our conscience to be bugging us about, leading to a calm state of mind.

But how does the “peace brings righteousness” part work? Perhaps it goes back to the connection between peace and faith? Like, when we trust God and His plan and want His will to be done, we feel at peace and it’s easier to live in accordance with His ways? Hmmm, what do you think? Scriptures On Maintaining Peace With One Another

“God blesses those who work for peace, for they will be called the children of God.” Matthew 5:9

“For as members of one body you are called to live in peace. And always be thankful.” Colossians 3:15b

Putting on the shoes of the Gospel of peace by living at peace with one another.

“And those who are peacemakers will plant seeds of peace and reap a harvest of righteousness.” James 3:18

“Work at living in peace with everyone, and work at living a holy life, for those who are not holy will not see the Lord.” Hebrews 12:14

“Do all that you can to live in peace with everyone.” Romans 12:18

“Make every effort to keep yourselves united in the Spirit, binding yourselves together with peace.” Ephesians 4:3

There are a lot of scriptures on living in harmony with one another. Just a guess, but I think that means it's important. Click To Tweet

It’s getting harder and harder to live at peace with others every day, especially for people who don’t mind conflict (conflict makes me very uncomfortable, and I will avoid it even to my own detriment).

Two women arguing.

There are so many divisive things going on in the world right now, but, as you can see in the previously listed scriptures about peace, we are to called to live in accord with one another, especially with other members of the body of Christ.

But it is also evident in these scriptures that those who strive for harmony will be blessed, receiving the title of children of God. So we can be sure that it will be worth the trouble, as is the case with all of God’s commands.

Blessings for Peace

“May the Lord show you His favor and give you His peace.” Numbers 6:26

“Now may the Lord of peace Himself give you His peace at all times and in every situation. The Lord be with you all.” 2 Thessalonians 3:16

“I pray that God, the source of hope, will fill you completely with joy and peace because you trust in Him. Then you will overflow with confident hope through the power of the Holy Spirit.” Romans15:13

These scriptures are a little different from the others. Instead of being about peace, they are Bible verses for peace. Blessings bestow upon the receiver God’s favor in one area or another; in this case, His tranquility.

What the Bible Says About Peace

So, to sum up, what can we do to feel at peace, even when the world seems topsy turvy? From studying the scriptures above, it’s plain to see that peace can be found by:

  • Accepting the gift of peace – it’s free!
  • Trusting in the Lord.
  • Having an attitude of gratitude.
  • Living life in accordance with God’s commands.
  • Living in harmony with others, especially other members of the family of God.

I challenge you (and myself) today to try it and see how it works. I have a feeling we will all feel more placid and joyful and be a much better representation of Jesus to those around us.
