9 Bible Verses About God’s Love – He Really Loves You!

Growing up, I heard about God’s love for me, but I’m not sure I believed it at a heart level. I didn’t have a true understanding about the love of God. I was raised in a pretty legalistic church, so I was always afraid of disappointing God or losing His love somehow. 

I didn’t feel secure in His love for me, which caused me to rebel by the time I went to college. I got caught up in the party scene, did what I wanted when I wanted, and fell far away from God. 

After going through a traumatic event, I hit rock bottom. I cried out to God, and He reached out to me with grace and mercy. While having a memory of the traumatic event, I had a vision of Him standing next to me during my darkest hour. 

This showed me that God loved me even when I was running away from Him.

I learned first-hand what the Bible says in Romans 5:8 – that God loved me while I was still a sinner. When I was living life how I wanted to, He was still pursuing me. After reading verses about God’s love, I turned from my sin and accepted His free gift of salvation

I am still learning and growing in His love. But I am a lot farther than I was before, and I am grateful for that. I now know that His love for me is unconditional, and I can trust Him in all areas of my life.

God is Love

What does the Bible say about God’s love? The Bible actually says that God IS love. 

He is the definition of love! He loved us so much that He sent His only Son into the world to die for our sins. He paid the ultimate price because of His love for us.

As always, it’s best to look at the word of God to help us dive deeper into these truths. Take some time to study the scriptures to learn more about how God is love. Here are some to get you started (all scriptures in this post are from the NIV). 

Scriptures That Show That God is Love 

“Dear friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God. Whoever does not love does not know God because God is love.” 1 John 4: 7-8

“If anyone acknowledges that Jesus is the Son of God, God lives in them and they in God. And so we know and rely on the love God has for us. God is love. Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in them.” 1 John 4:15-16

For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” John 3:16

“But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” Romans 5:8

As you can see, the scriptures above prove to us that God is love. He modeled to us what love really is. Love gives and love sacrifices. 

God loved us so much, that even when we were still slaves to sin, He sent His Son to die for us! Just take some time to reflect on that…

Wow… That is a powerful truth. God loved us first.

When I personally reflect on this truth, I realize that I don’t have to do anything to earn God’s love. I don’t have to be perfect. I don’t have to follow a list of rules. I don’t have to look a certain way. 

I don’t have to do ANYTHING to earn the love of God. Why is that? 

Because God loved me before I even knew about Him. He pursued me first when He sent His Son to die on the cross for my sins. 

He offered me His free gift of salvation out of His love for me. He, in His great love, did all the work for me! 

When I understood the truth about God’s love in college, I accepted His free gift of salvation. His love led me to turn from my sin and accept Jesus as Lord and Savior of my life.

You too, can accept Christ into your life today and receive salvation! (Read Romans 6:23, Romans 10:9, John 3:16 for more info!) 

God’s Love is…

Now that I’ve shared how God is love, I’d like to share what His love looks like. 

A great way to study the characteristics of His love is to read 1 Corinthians 13:4-7. 

1 Corinthians 13:4-7 shows us what God's love looks like. It says, "Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres."

God’s love is different than any love we can receive on earth because His love is perfect, as He is perfect. His love isn’t flawed like human love can often be. 

His love is patient. His love is kind. Because of His love, when we are washed by the blood of Jesus, God does not hold our record of wrongs (or sins) over our head but instead, removes the punishment of sin from us because of what Jesus did. 

God’s love is faithful, and we can trust it. God’s love protects us. Once we become a child of God and are accepted into His kingdom, we can rest in the security of His love. 

A verse that I love to turn to to remind myself of how God protects me and takes care of me is when Jesus was explaining how God looks out for us in John 10:27-30:

My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me. I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one will snatch them out of my hand. My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all; no one can snatch them out of my Father’s hand. I and the Father are one.” John 10:27-30

You are Loved by God

If you are reading this, God wants you to know that you, too, are loved by God! God loves you so much that He sent His only Son to die on your behalf and take the punishment for your sins. 

Every person walking on this earth is special to God! God loves everyone and that includes you. 

There is a parable in the Bible (Matthew 18:12-14) that illustrates this point very well. Do you know the parable Jesus shared about a shepherd leaving his flock of 99 sheep to look for 1 sheep that was lost?

The point of the story is to show that God loves every individual soul that He created. It pains His heart when there are people who are lost or wandering away from Him. God has offered His salvation to all, and He wants all to come into His kingdom. It is worth it to Him to search for just one person and to welcome them into the fold. 

“The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. Instead he is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish but everyone to come to repentance.” 2 Peter 3:9

Reflect on the parable of the lost sheep (Matthew 18:12-14) and the Bible verse 2 Peter 3:9. What does this show you about God’s love for you specifically?

A Few Other Scriptures About God’s Love for You

“For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.” Romans 8:38-39

“…so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith. And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, may have power, together with all the Lord’s holy people, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, and to know this love that surpasses knowledge—that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God.” Ephesians 3:17-19

God’s Love

In summary, God is love. He loved us first before we knew about Him. He sent His Son to die on the cross and take the punishment for our sins. Because of the death and victorious resurrection of Jesus, we can be in right relationship with Him.

God’s love is patient, it is kind. When we accept Christ as our Lord and Savior, God washes our sins away, and we are made new. 

He loves every person on this earth and is not willing that any should perish but wants all to come into repentance and enter the kingdom of God.

Nothing can separate us from the love of God. We are safe in the palm of His hand. His love guards us, and protects us. Once we have fully embraced and internalized His perfect love for us, we realize that we can totally trust Him with every aspect of our lives.

After all, if a good earthly father, with all his faults and lacking God’s omniscience, leads his children the best he can out of love for them, how much better will God, who knows everything (EVERYTHING!!!) and loves us with a love so strong that it defies all human understanding lead us?
