Welcome to Catching Courage! Where It’s Guts, Grit, and Glory to God!

It takes guts when it comes to trusting God. After all, we can’t usually tell He’s around using our senses. It’s much easier to put our trust in what we can see and feel and hear; things like people, money, and possessions. Somehow, it’s easier even when we know those things aren’t as trustworthy as God.

Then, once we do put our trust in God, it takes constant grit to keep it up. We are faced with hundreds of choices each day. That means we have hundreds of chances every single day to either choose to do what God’s Word tells us we should do or choose to do what the world or our flesh tells us to do.

Unfortunately, the latter is oftentimes the path of least resistance, and, therefore, the path we are strongly tempted to choose. This is how Satan, the enemy, wants it. He wants it to be hard to do the God thing, and he will do everything in his power to deter us, especially when we’re working hard to choose Jesus.

So how do we go about laying a solid foundation for living a life of guts and grit in which we choose God’s way every time, bringing glory to God and victory for the Kingdom? Glad you asked! In fact, it’s the reason I created this blog in the first place! God wants us all to know how we can bring Him glory by saying “Yes” to His ways in all the things we do, big and small!

Guts – Trusting God

A main component of learning to trust God is to learn to trust His Word. If we don’t believe that His Word is truth, nothing in it will change the way we feel about God, life, spiritual warfare, or anything else it talks about.

Another main element of trusting God is learning about Him and His identity. In doing so, we can see that the very nature of God and Jesus and the Holy Spirit goes against doubt, fear, lies, temptation, and all the other things that go hand-in-hand with distrust.

As we start to trust in the Bible and God’s nature as a loving, merciful, generous God, we will begin to develop a deeper trust in Him.

Grit – Saying “Yes”

Once we have laid the foundation of trusting God and His Word, the next step is learning to say, “Yes” when He calls. This is how we become real warriors, fighting on God’s team against the activities of Satan going on around us. In order to become “Yes People”, we have to:

  • Understand the various ways God communicates with people today.
  • Fully internalize and embrace our own identity both in Christ and in who God created us to be.
  • Understand the ways Satan tries to keep us from doing the right thing so that we can recognize his attacks.
  • Prepare for spiritual battle.

“Be strong in the Lord and His mighty power. Put on all of God’s armor so that you will be able to stand against all the strategies of the devil. For we are not fighting against flesh-and-blood enemies, but against evil rulers and authorities of the unseen world, against mighty powers in this dark world, and against evil spirits in the heavenly places.”

Ephesians 6:10-12

Trusting God – The Details

  • We will learn why we can trust God’s Word, the Bible.
  • We will examine scripture to learn about God’s identity.
  • We will find scriptures and Bible stories that strengthen our belief that He is trustworthy.
  • We will look at what He says about each and every one of us, so that we can love and believe in ourselves, which is a huge step in being able to love others (one of God’s most important callings) and trust our ability to do what He asks of us.
  • We will see how His promises help us to trust Him more.
  • We will see how God has used people in the past and apply those lessons to our own lives.
  • We will discuss ways He talks to us so we can hear Him when He calls.
  • We will look at trusting in God’s plan and timing when things are not going the way we want them to.
  • We will learn about spiritual warfare and Satan’s strategies to prevent us from succeeding in advancing the Kingdom of God.
  • And, of course, we will use the Bible to help us form an arsenal of weapons against doubt and the enemy.

As we explore all these things to work on trusting God more deeply, we will also explore ways and reasons to trust Him in:

  • Managing our resources – The truth is, nothing He gives us is ours. It’s all His. And its up to us to manage all the stuff for His glory.
  • Marriage – Marriage is under attack, people. If you doubt it, just look at how confused the world is about gender and what marriage is supposed to look like.
  • Parenting – Just as marriage is under attack, so is the family. Broken families create broken people who can’t separate themselves from fleshy temptations. Just what Satan wants.
  • Relationships (maybe) – I don’t like relationships (I’m an introverted loner). LOL! Relationships are messy, you know? But they say it’s worth it, and God wants us to fellowship with other believers and also make disciples, so let’s (maybe) take a look at this facet of life, too (I guess).
  • The big stuff – God doesn’t just require obedience and trust in our everyday lives. Sometimes He also asks us to do big things. A deep trust in Him makes it A LOT easier to say, “Yes” to all things, big and small.
