God is With You – Proof and Points to Ponder

Trusting God and living out His will is an amazing adventure, but it can be downright scary sometimes! Luckily, the Bible makes it clear that God is with you no matter what, and here are some Bible verses that prove it!

I’ve been really trying hard to get out of my comfort zone and do what I know God wants me to do for a little while now, so I know that it can be a true test of faith and even frightening at times! But sometimes that’s the whole point, and it’s a point I don’t want to miss.

So to help me (and you, too) be strong and courageous, I have compiled a list of Bible verses that prove that God will be right there with us when things get hard or scary. I’ve also included some stories of God being with His people and the amazing results of His presence in their lives.

Being sure of His persistent presence and having scripture to back up our faith can take the fear down a notch and kick the faith up to Kingdom-changing levels! So let’s get started!

Bible Verses About God Being With You

There are a TON of Bible verses about God being with you. The only explanation for this is that people have always had trouble believing, and have, therefore, needed constant reassurance. It’s not that we don’t want to believe. It’s more that we can’t always see Him or feel Him. And when you can’t see or feel something, it’s hard for to believe. But it’s worth the effort; here’s why:

“Then Jesus told him, ‘You believe because you have seen me. Blessed are those who believe without seeing me.'”

John 20:29

Of course, we probably won’t “see” Jesus in the way that Thomas did in the scripture above. This means that if we believe, we will be blessed! I don’t know about you, but I need all the Jesus blessings I can get!

The Best God Is With Us Bible Verse

If you only take one scripture away from this post, let it be this one. Because… just, wow! Ready?

One of the names ascribed to Jesus (who is one with God) is “Immanuel.” His name literally means “God is with us.”

“‘Look! The virgin will conceive a child! She will give birth to a son, and they will call Him Immanuel, which means “God is with us.”‘” Matthew 1:23

That could be the end of the post right there! But don’t worry, there are many more scriptures that speak to God being with us listed below, so keep reading!

Other God Is With You Bible Verses

“And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate, who will never leave you.” John 14:16

“For truly my words are not false; One who is perfect in knowledge is with you.” Job 36:4 (NKJV)

“For the Lord your God is living among you. He is a mighty savior. He will take delight in you with gladness. With His love, He will calm all your fears. He will rejoice over you with joyful songs.” Zephaniah 3:17

“For what great nation has a god as near to them as the Lord our God is near to us whenever we call on Him?” Deuteronomy 4:7

“For the Lord your God is going with you! He will fight for you against your enemies, and He will give you victory!” Deuteronomy 20:4

This next verse is referring to Solomon building the temple David had dreamed of, but it is still relevant today. Anytime God calls us to do something, if we do the work and refuse to let fear or discouragement stop us, God will be with us and help us see it through.

“Then David continued, ‘Be strong and courageous, and do the work. Don’t be afraid or discouraged, for the Lord God, my God, is with you. He will not fail you or forsake you. He will see to it that all the work related to the Temple of the Lord is finished correctly.” 1 Chronicles 28:20

“For the Lord your God is a merciful God; He will not abandon you or destroy you or forget the solemn covenant He made with your ancestors.” Deuteronomy 4:31

Hands clasping in front of sunset.

“The Lord of Heaven’s Armies is here among us; the God of Israel is our fortress.” Psalms 46:7 and Psalms 46:11

“The Lord of Heaven’s Armies is here among us; the God of Israel is our fortress.” Psalms 46:11

Yep, you read that right. The last 2 are the same! David repeats a lot of things in the Psalms. I always assume a repeated point or word is something God really wants us to get. So I listed it twice to help make God’s point. 😉

“So you see, God is with us. He is our leader. His priests blow their trumpets and lead us into battle against you. O people of Israel, do not fight against the Lord, the God of your ancestors, for you will not succeed!” 2 Chronicles 13:12

Oh, this next one… this next one makes my heart swell with love for the Lord! Maybe it’s because I’ve nursed 4 babies, and there really is no way to forget about them or not love them. Or maybe its how adamant He is about not ever forgetting us that he’s placed our names on the one part of the body that is almost never covered and always easy to see.

“Yet Jerusalem says, ‘The Lord has deserted us; the Lord has forgotten us.’ ‘Never! [says the Lord.] Can a mother forget her nursing child? Can she feel no love for the child she has borne? But even if that were possible, I would not forget you! See, I have written your name on the palms of my hands. Always in my mind is a picture of Jerusalem’s walls in ruins.'” Isaiah 49:14-16

Examples From the Bible

Examples of What Happens When God is With You

Now, to further strengthen our faith in Him, let’s look at some examples of the blessings of which we can partake when God is with us. And I want you to pay attention to the names you see here because you’re going to see some of them again in the next section.

You Can Be Strong and Courageous When God is With You

“‘Do not fear, for I am with you; do not anxiously look about you, for I am your God. I will strengthen you, surely I will help you, surely I will uphold you with My righteous right hand.'” Isaiah 41:10

Who wrote the majority of the Psalms? Anyone? That’s right – it was David! Here’s some of what He has to say about God’s presence.

“The Lord is with me; I will not be afraid. What can mere mortals do to me? The Lord is with me; He is my helper. I look in triumph on my enemies.” Psalms 118:6-7

“Even when I walk through the darkest valley, I will not be afraid, for you are close beside me. Your rod and your staff protect and comfort me.” Psalms 23:4

In the next 2 verses, God is addressing the Israelites during their 40-year tour of the wilderness. God knew that their faith was being tested more and more the longer they wandered. So He told them He was with them over and over again.

“‘No one will be able to stand against you as long as you live. For I will be with you as I was with Moses. I will not fail you or abandon you.'” Joshua 1:5

“‘This is my command–be strong and courageous! Do not be afraid or discouraged. For the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.'” Joshua 1:9

What all of these verses has in common is that when God is with us, we don’t have anything to fear. Wandering in the wilderness? No worries. Being chased down by your enemies? It’s ok. Walking through the “darkest valley?” It’s all good.

The point? We can have courage and strength, even when our situation seems bleak, because God’s got our back no matter what!

God’s Presence Makes You Powerful

“The Lord answered [Gideon], ‘I will be with you, and you will strike down all the Midianites, leaving none alive.'” And he did! With only 300 men, to boot!

“Solomon son of David took firm control of his kingdom, for the Lord his God was with him and made him very powerful.” 2 Chronicles 1:1

“And David became more and more powerful, because the Lord God of Heaven’s Armies was with him.” 2 Chronicles 15:9

“And you know that God annointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power. Then Jesus went around doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with Him.” Acts 10:38

If you want more evidence of the power given to people in whom the Holy Spirit resides, please go a read the book of Acts! It is chock full of accounts of all the miraculous things the early church founders performed and the way the church grew by leaps and bounds as a result!

When God is With You, You Can Be Bold

What good is courage and power if we can’t act or speak boldy in the name of Jesus? Good thing God’s presence has that covered, too!

You can’t be much more in the presence of God when the Holy Spirit is in you, as the following scripture says it is. God’s Spirit in us means that we can be bold, like the founders of the early church were throughout the book of Acts, preaching and performing miracles in Jesus’ name.

Cardboard with a hole cut in it and the words "be bold" showing through the hole.

“After this prayer, the meeting place shook, and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit. Then they preached the word of God with boldness.” Acts 4:31

You Can Lead People to Jesus When God is With You

The next verse is referring to speaking in tongues and prophesying around unbelievers. Jesus says in the previous verses that unbelievers who hear prophecy will become believers. And prophecy is a gift of the Holy Spirit, who lives in all believers.

“As they listen, their secret thoughts will be exposed, and they will fall to their knees and worship God, declaring, ‘God is truly here among you.'” 1 Cor. 14:25

You Cannot be Moved When God is With You

When we’re dedicated to serving and obeying the Lord, it is so important that we be an immovable force. Satan is always trying to get us to second guess our callings and the very fact that God is with us and for us. God has been described many times as being a rock. Rocks are immovable, so when God is our right-hand man, we cannot be shaken, as evidenced by this verse.

Person climbing a huge boulder.

“I have set the Lord continually before me; because He is at my right hand, I will not be shaken.” Psalms 16:8

When God is With You, You Can Be Successful

It’s important to note here that in these 3 cases, the Bible is sure to clarify that wisdom and obedience are precursors to the success that comes with God’s presence. God is still with His people, even when they are behaving badly; but like Proverbs 16:3 says, success only comes from actions committed to the Lord.

“The Lord was with Joseph, so he succeeded in everything he did as he served in the home of his Egyptian master.” Genesis 39:2

“So the Lord was with him, and Hezekiah was successful in everything he did.” 2 Kings 18:7

Woman looking a paper and acting happy to have succeeded.

“David continued to succeed in everything he did, for the Lord was with him.” 1 Samuel 18:14

“Call your councils of war, but they will be worthless. Develop your strategies, but they will not succeed. For God is with us!” Isaiah 8:10

You Can Recognize Truth in God’s Presence

Another benefit of living with the Holy Spirit is that truth will always be illuminated. And in this day and age, when Satan’s lies are being spewed from radios and TVs all over the world and repeated over and over until they seem like truth, this is a very important power to have.

“And I will ask the Father and He will give you another Counselor, who will never leave you. He is the Holy Spirit, who leads into all truth.” John 14:16 –17

You’re Not Alone in Your Doubt! Examples of “Doubters” From the Bible

Now, before you go saying that those people were different, special, chosen; that you’re not like them, let me remind you that you are chosen, too! You were created on purpose, for a purpose, just like they were. But the biggest thing you have in common with them is that you and they are human. And all humans are prone to doubt.

To prove that even “people of God” doubted, let’s look at some times when Bible characters wondered, like you and I do today, if God was actually there.

Woman doubting.

The People of Israel -These were God’s people! Their not-too-distant-ancestors had seen with their own eyes all that God had done for them, from the flood and Abraham’s covenant to God parting the Red Sea to lead them out of slavery. And you can be sure the stories had been passed down from generation to generation. Yet they doubted.

“Yet Jerusalem says, ‘The Lord has deserted us; the Lord has forgotten us.'” Isaiah 49:14

David – David was called “a man after God’s own heart.”And, if you remember from earlier in the post, God was with him, making him more powerful and successful. But that didn’t mean that he didn’t wonder where God was from time to time.

“My God, my God, why have you abandoned me? Why are you so far away when I groan for help?” Psalms 22:1

Thomas – This disciple is the guy from whom we get the phrase “doubting Thomas.” If anyone is guilty of doubting God’s presence, it’s definitely him. In fact, after the resurrection of Jesus, he saw Jesus face to face and still had to put his fingers into His wounds before he could fully believe!

The hand of Jesus with a nail wound.

“Jesus was standing among them. ‘Peace be with you,’ he said. Then he said to Thomas, ‘Put your finger here, and look at my hands. Put your hand into the wound in my side. Don’t be faithless any longer. Believe!'” John 20:26b-27

Gideon – I love the story of Gideon. Talk about an underdog story! He was literally hiding from the Midianites, threshing wheat in a wine press, when he was chosen by God to save His people from the Midianites. The angelic messenger even called him a “mighty warrior.”

Gideon responds by saying, “Pardon me, my lord, but if the Lord is with us, why has all this happened to us? …the Lord has abandoned us and given us into the hands of Midian.”

Scripture clearly tells us that God was with Gideon, helping him defeat an army whose “camels were like grains of sand on the seashore – too many to count” (Judges 7:12). Even still, Gideon hadn’t seen God’s presence in his circumstance, and so he had doubted.

Even the people God chose to be His messengers and warriors felt moments of separation from God. However, it didn't mean that they were, in fact, separated from God. So go easy on yourself when you wonder where God went! Click To Tweet
